Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone has called for time and patience for his transitioning team ahead of their La Liga match against Osasuna. The red-and-white side will host the Navarrese club on Wednesday at the Metropolitano stadium amid a squad overhaul that saw seven departures and five arrivals this summer.
Simeone described the team as a work in progress that needs time, a commodity that doesn't exist in football. "We're used to the negativity from a lot of people. As soon as there's a chance for criticism, it's there." the Argentine manager said. He stated the group has an incredible attitude and must keep running and working hard. The team, which has taken 10 points from the last 15 available, needs to maintain its recent form and keep working towards the goal of 90 minutes of consistent intensity.
Atleti face an Osasuna side sitting 11th in the table with seven points from a mixed start of two wins, one draw and two losses. Jagoba Arrasate's team arrives on the back of two consecutive defeats, including a 0-2 loss to Espanyol last weekend. Their striker Ante Budimir is the team's top scorer this season with four goals.
Simeone emphasised the importance of the fixture. "We need to play a great game against an opponent that needs the points just as much as we do," he stated. He also highlighted the role of the fans and the energy from the stadium as key factors. On the injury front, he confirmed Julián Álvarez is still recovering and won't be available, while Jonathan David, who came on well last time, will be assessed for a starting role or a substitute appearance.
The coach also spoke about new signing Obed Vargas, whom he described as humble, noble and hardworking. "Vargas will have to be ready for his chance," Simeone noted, acknowledging the youngster faces stiff competition in midfield.
Osasuna, meanwhile, approach this clash with several key absences including Aimar Oroz, Jorge Herrando and Moi Gómez. The team needs to react after their latest defeat to avoid slipping further down the table. The Navarrese will seek points at the always difficult Metropolitano.
