Osasuna have sacked manager Luis Miguel Ramis and appointed Jagoba Arrasate as his replacement on a contract until 30 June 2029. The move comes in the wake of a 5-2 defeat to Real Betis, a result that leaves the club 16th in La Liga with just eight points from eight games.
The club's board made the decision on Monday after a run of five matches without a win, which included four defeats. Osasuna have conceded 18 goals this season, the worst defensive record in the division. Arrasate, born in Berriatua in 1978, returns to a dugout he previously occupied for six seasons between 2018 and 2024, achieving promotion to the top flight and a Copa del Rey final.
A familiar face returns
Jagoba Arrasate signed his contract this morning and will be officially presented at a press conference tomorrow at 12:30. He will be assisted by second coach Bittor Alkiza, with whom he worked during his previous stint. The club confirmed the agreement in a statement highlighting the manager's experience; he is the second-most experienced coach in the club's history with 256 matches in charge.
"Osasuna reaches an agreement with Jagoba Arrasate for him to be its coach until 2029," the club said. Arrasate himself received the welcome message: "Welcome back to your home, mister!" His first training session in charge is scheduled for Wednesday, with focus turning to the next league fixture.
Pressing context
Ramis's departure comes after just eight official matches. His assistants José Manuel Gil, Iván Madroño, Miguel Ángel Fernández and José Fajardo are also leaving the club. The squad, hampered by several injuries and some controversial refereeing decisions, needs an immediate boost. Arrasate knows the club's structure and identity inside out, something the three managers who succeeded him, Vicente Moreno, Alessio Lisci and Ramis himself, failed to build on for more than a season.
Osasuna now face a key match at El Sadar next Sunday, 18 October, against 15th-placed Racing Santander. The squad can check the full season schedule on our fixtures page and the squad status on squad. The clear objective is to stop the poor run and start collecting points to move away from the relegation zone.
